What is the Integrative Capstone Project?

The Integrative Capstone Project is "a self-directed project in which teachers collaborate  within or across grade levels or departments to incorporate innovations into their curricula. Throughout the seminar, a portfolio is built to demonstrate the development, implementation, and outcomes of the project" (UMUC, 2010). The purpose of this capstone project is to provide the educators with an opportunity to apply previous knowledge and skills gained from other courses in the program (UMUC, 2010).

  A Description of my Project:

Course: Introduction to Microcomputer Applications

In a restricted environment (Maximum Security Prison Classroom) with no internet access, I must teach my students how to effectively use the computer and its applications, which consist of Microsoft Office products. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher). The curriculum requires that they attain skills that are sufficient enough for them to apply in a "free-world" setting in the workplace, and in general.

The Challenge/Problems:

·         Restricted Applications/Computer Settings

·         No Internet Access

The Question being addressed:

Can individuals be taught how to use the basic functions of the internet without having live internet access?

My Plan:

The restricted applications/settings, such as the internet will be displayed through the use of mimicking (role play and "going through the motions"), so that the students will get a feel of using the applications. The tools that will be used to enhance the quality of student learning in this lesson include:

·         Screen Shots

·         Web Captures

·         Videos

·         Multimedia Sources

·         Offline Pages
